Singing Consistency in Christ

My favorite Christian song, you ask? I can’t tell you.
No, it isn’t because I don’t have any per se. It’s because I have too many. Choosing one would be an impossible feat for me.
Music speaks to my soul. Music is how I cry out to God. Music is my language of love. My Spirit soars with the harmonies of hymns, spirituals, choruses, praise and worship, contemporary Christian, Southern gospel, and any other type of music you can name being sung to the glory of God. Yes, I’ll even include metal, rap, and any other LOUD music in my list of genres.
I memorize Scripture through music. I feel the Spirit motivate me to grow through music. I often feel the closest to God through music.
No, I can’t choose one favorite song.
I can tell you that I choose songs based on seasons of my life. I can tell you that I seem to have theme songs during various seasons of my life. I can tell you that some songs speak to no matter what’s going on in my life, but I can’t choose a favorite.
In recent weeks, however, one song has been speaking to me. The first time I heard it on 99.1 Joy FM our local (tee hee hee) Christian radio station I was cranking it up and singing along. It was that kind of song.
You know. The one you can’t just listen to, but must raise your voice to sing along because you fully agree with the word being proclaimed.
 
 
Yesterday the song played as we were headed off on our spontaneous family day. Even playing quietly in the background, I picked it out, cranked up the volume, and said to my family, “I don’t know who this is or the name of this song, but this is quickly becoming one of my favorites.”
How could you not love a song that talks about our foundation being laid out in His Word? A song that reminds us our salvation is sure. A song that proclaims we will not be shaken because Jesus is our firm foundation!
I get glory bumps every time I lift my voice to praise with these words.
Listen, and worship with me for just a moment.

Imagine my surprise when looking for a YouTube video that I discovered this “contemporary Christian” single was really a remake of a hymn.
 

 
 

This song I’ve been worshipping to and thought was new is an old hymn called “How Firm a Foundation”.
 

He makes all things new.


For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:9-11
Sisters and brothers, are you built on the Firm Foundation? Whether you’re listening to yesteryear’s hymn or today’s contemporary Christian song, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. His foundation is firm, salvation secure, and those who build upon it cannot be shaken.
I beg of you, build upon that firm foundation! Seek Him while He may be found. I would love to talk with you or pray with you as you seek His face.     I love how they took an old hymn and made it relevant today (plus so much easier to quickly sing along). Jesus of course is always relevant. I love how God can reach into and speak to our hearts and often just when we need it most. I could never say that I have a favorite song. Though I must admit there are some that will always speak to my heart and often take me back to that place I was in when I first heard it which of course then fills me with such joy. One of those is "More" by Matthew West. Thanks for sharing!

    Isn't it wonderful how a lot of new Christian artists take the old hymns and sing them in a new way to draw a younger audience to the Lord who may have never heard the hymns before? I love it. God is good all the time and we really need to build our foundation on the Lord and trust in Him for everything!!

      Aloha and welcome to the crazy little blog I call home! I will be checking out that blog things weekend although it sounds like it probably contains food or recipes which will probably be bad for many diet. :)

    I am so grateful to the Christian foundation my parents helped build as a child in my life. When I read this post I tried to pick "one" Christian music favorite, and it is hard, but "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me is up there as I heard it when my husband was ill, and after he passed it helped me a lot.

      I don't think there's a bad Mercy Me song! I definitely can't pick a favorite. Too many songs!

    I love how old songs can be renewed. Not simply a new singer or rhythm but completely renewed. Chris Tomlin, Hillsong and Matt Redman are a few who have been doing that for a while.

    Thanks for sharing this, I've enjoyed listening to this (first time) and can definitely see how you would get hooked!

      I had just asked in the car if anyone knew who did this song. There were guesses, but all wrong.

      This prompt gave me a reason to do in and find out the story behind it. I was surprised, but will enjoy it even more now.
